This article analyzes the most recent Italian debate on surrogacy, using the concept of cultural anomaly as described by anthropologist Mary Douglas. Surrogacy is a complex phenomenon that involves different levels of analysis that intersect with the fields of scientific ethics, law, re/production and motherhood. The authors argue that it is necessary to investigate all the doubts and worries that surrogacy practices raise, since in Italy as in other contexts, the mainstream debate on surrogacy often narrows the possibility of delving into the discussion. They maintain that this lack of depth contributes to stigmatizing and victimizing the women who are involved in this experience, as long as it does not recognize any autonomy and awareness in their choices. With this article, the authors want to add a tassel to the mosaic of contributions and elaborations about this complex topic.
In questo articolo si analizza il più recente dibattito italiano relativo alla gestazione per altri (GPA), utilizzando in particolare il concetto di anomalia culturale teorizzato dall’antropologa Mary Douglas. La GPA (o surrogacy) è un fenomeno complesso che mette in gioco livelli di pensiero e analisi diversi, stratificati e amplissimi che toccano, fra le altre, le sfere dell’etica scientifica, del diritto, della ri/produzione e della maternità (e della genitorialità in generale). Si ritiene necessario indagare tutti gli interrogativi e le inquietudini che questa pratica fa esplodere, poiché, come sostengono le autrici, in Italia, come altrove, il dibattito sulla surrogacy spesso rischia di limitare la possibilità di approfondimento dei discorsi e, soprattutto, contribuisce a stigmatizzare e vittimizzare le donne coinvolte nella pratica, negando che possa esserci autonomia e consapevolezza nella scelta di chi decide di portare avanti la gravidanza per qualcun altro. Con questo articolo le autrici si propongono quindi di aggiungere un tassello al mosaico di contributi ed elaborazioni che tentano di approfondire l’analisi di questo tema nella sua complessità.
